Featured conversation: 20 Questions Directors of Nonprofits Should Ask about HR

The board’s responsibility for the stewardship of human resources is a key part of its mandate. Employees, volunteers, consultants and other service providers make up the “human capital” of an organization, and represent its greatest asset and may also represent one of the greatest areas of risk.

Chartered Accountants of Canada (CA) recently published 20 Questions Directors of Not-for-Profit Organizations should ask about Human Resources, a free resource that has been endorsed by the HR Council for the Nonprofit Sector and is available in our HR Toolkit and on the CA’s website.

Have you considered:

  • What is the board’s responsibility for managing and supporting the Executive Director?
  • How does the board oversee the organization’s human resources strategy and policies?
  • What should the board of directors know about terminating employment relationships?
