Accountability for nonprofits:
What you need to know
Tools and resources that outline best practices for accountability are vital to strengthening the credibility of nonprofits across Canada.
Road to Accountability, an initiative of Charity Central, provides information and education about accountability and transparency for charities and nonprofits in plain language format.
Nonprofits can feel more at ease taking on accountability best practices with the help of Office in a Box, another free resource from Charity Central that helps organize and archive a charity or nonprofit’s most important information. At the strategic level, board members would find it helpful for educational and accountability purposes.

Trends & Issues:
A dialogue about compensation survey data
On April 7, 2011 representatives of nine environmental nonprofits gathered in Toronto via web conference to discuss the preliminary results of the TREC 2011 Salary and Benefits Survey. The participants in this discussion are people who filled in the questionnaires and will use the survey data in the course of their work.
Our conversation was about the survey findings, the usefulness and relevance of the data and how to improve future surveys. Donna Neusch of Training Resources for the Environmental Community (TREC) started with an overview of the survey methodology, and Bonnie Shiell of the HR Council for the Nonprofit Sector (HR Council) presented top-line findings for Canadian environmental organizations.

Driving Change – Understanding Executive Directors
Survey of nonprofit leaders aims to get a better understanding of executive directors and the challenges they face
The HR Council for the Nonprofit Sector (HR Council) is currently conducting a national survey of nonprofit leaders in an effort to explore and better understand the characteristics, motivations and challenges of executive directors.
The survey has a dual-track, with questionnaires for executive directors and those who sit on nonprofit boards to provide feedback and input from their own perspectives on the executive director role. The survey is not intended to collect feedback on the performance of individual executive directors, but rather focus on the perceptions of the role itself from two distinct vantage points.
