Collaboration is key: Manitoba Federation of Non-Profit Organizations forms membership with the Alliance of Manitoba Sector Councils
December 21, 2009
The Manitoba Federation of Non-Profit Organizations (MFNPO) has recently become the 18th member to join with the Alliance of Manitoba Sector Councils (AMSC).
Collaboration among sector councils is a high priority for the AMSC, so extending their membership to the MFNPO means a step in the right direction. The AMSC also felt that, among other things, the MFNPO has demonstrated leadership in initiating a nonprofit sector labour force development strategy, including a labour market information activity and a specific occupation skills development pilot.
This new alliance also represents an opportunity for the MFNPO to strengthen occupation skills within the sector as a whole. The alliance should help bolster the impact of a skills survey just released called the Manitoba Non-Profit Sector Workforce Skills Survey. Specifically, the survey sets out to identify nonprofit workforce skills shortages regarding health and social services in Manitoba communities. Results showed there is an urgent need to access skill shortage information from the thousands of community-based health and social service organizations that provide services to all Manitoba communities. Once the results are made available in January 2010, they can be used to develop future labour market strategies.
In Manitoba alone there are currently 8, 220 nonprofit organizations. In Manitoba, Saskatchewan and the Territories combined there are a total of 174, 622 employees in the sector, who make up 13% of the total labour force.
